Confederate National Flag

This flag design shown here as well as the design styles of the uniforms of the newly formed southern army had a design link. This is what makes the painting shown here an
interesting combination of visual history. This initial Confederate States flag was designed by a Prussian artist named Nicola Marschall. Mr. Marschall also designed the grey, yellow and blue color combinations of the confederate uniforms used by the armies of the south during the Civil War. Mr Marschall lived in Marion Alabama at the time of this design.

Green Mountain Boys Flag

This flags history includes a very determined patriot named Ethan Allen. Following rejection by the New York authorities of an appeal that the Vermont region be established as a separate province, Allen organized a volunteer militia, called the Green Mountain Boys, to resist and evict proponents of the New York cause. The Green Mountain Boys Flag began as a regimental flag used by the Green Mountain Boys and still exists as one of the few regimental flags from the American Revolution.

Irish Regiment Flag

This flag painted here is the infamous 4th Irish Brigade flag. On the day of July 21st, 1861 at the battle of Bull Run Captain Thomas Francis Meagher of the 69th New York State Militia had his horse shot from under him by a round of cannon-fire. Meagher, that day acting as major for the regiment, sprang to his feet and shouted, “Boys! look at that flag–remember Ireland and Fontenoy.” The Irish Brigade was an infantry brigade, consisting predominantly of Irish immigrants, that served in the Union Army in the American Civil War. The designation of the first regiment in the brigade, the 69th New York Infantry, or the “Fighting 69th”, continued in later wars. They were known in part for their famous warcry, the “faugh a ballagh”, which is an old Gaelic phrase, fág an bealach, meaning “clear the way”.

The Iowa Flag

The original Iowa flag is shown in this painting. On May 11, 1917, like many State flags, the Iowa flag began life as a regimental banner for State National Guardsman. Iowa was never in a hurry to adopt a state flag as Iowans felt, after the Civil war, that the stars and stripes appropriately represented all of the United States. And so it was not until 1921, almost seventy-five years after the admission of Iowa into the Union, that a state flag was finally adopted by the Legislature.

Remembering Those Who Serve With Art

Art That Raises Awareness To Those Who Serve
I was honored to have in the hallway of Farmington Minnesota High School during their Farmington’s Patriotic Day Celebration a 40″x40″ framed print of my “We The People” flag from the “Preamble Flag Series” of historic flags. Every veteran that was at the Farmington event signed their name directly on the print, although the first few were a little shy about marking the art up with their name they soon got into it. The local boy scouts would thank them for their service after each soldier signed their signature. Now that the soldiers signatures are on the print the piece will hang in the local government center where the community can see and read all the names of the soldiers who have and are serving their country from the Farmington community. The event is a collaborative effort of the Farmington American Legion, Farmington’s Lions Club, Farmington Veterans of Foreign Wars, Farmington Warrior To Citizen Program and School District 192. A really nice event
