7. To Ourselves and Our Posterity – Preamble Flag Series Art Print

The “Appeal To Heaven” flag and it’s variations were flown before and during the American Revolution. The flag’s origins began when a group called The Son’s Of Liberty would rally under a large pine tree in Boston known as the “Liberty Tree”. The phrase “Appeal to Heaven” comes from John Locke’s Two Treatises of Government. The phrase connotes that after all other alternatives of seeking justice have been exhausted, only an “appeal to heaven” remains. This flag was flown on George Washington’s private ship “Hannah” on September 2nd 1775.

3. Establish Justice, Ensure the Domestic Tranquility – Preamble Flag Series Art Print

This is the Betsy Ross Flag. In June 1776, George Washington came to Betsy Ross’s shop with a congressional committee. The committee appointed Betsy the task of sewing a flag based on the rough drawing by Col. Ross and she made the first American flag. After flying the flag at the peak of one of their vessels the committee brought the flag to the State House and Congress unanimously approved it.

The first Navy Jack is shown as having alternating red and white stripes with an uncoiled rattlesnake and the “Don’t Tread On Me” motto. First used as a signal to engage the enemy.

5. Promote the General Welfare – Preamble Flag Series Art Print

Swallow Tail American Flag. The 38 star American national flag in the form carried by the United States cavalry beginning in the early 1860’s is depicted in this print by the artist Steve Berger. It was in the year 1862 that regimental guidons took the form of the national colors instead of a two stripe, red over white flag in the same swallow tail format.

1. We The People – Preamble Flag Series Art Print

The modern day American Flag was approved in 1912. This image seems to have dust and smoke swirling about it. With the preamble of the US Consititution included this print seems to be shouting freedom. This image intentionally does not show stars on it so it can not be dated. The artist wanted it to be up to the viewer to decide if the smokey look makes it easier to think that this flag may be flying over Iwo Jima during the 1942 battle or the flag that survived the World Trade Center attack in 2001. It is up to the viewer to decide.

Grand Union flag of 1775 is considered by most historians as the first official American flag. It was an adaption of the British navy flag but with thirteen stripes representing the thirteen colonies. At this time a majority of colonists did not want to break with Britain.

Remembering Those Who Serve With Art

Art That Raises Awareness To Those Who Serve
I was honored to have in the hallway of Farmington Minnesota High School during their Farmington’s Patriotic Day Celebration a 40″x40″ framed print of my “We The People” flag from the “Preamble Flag Series” of historic flags. Every veteran that was at the Farmington event signed their name directly on the print, although the first few were a little shy about marking the art up with their name they soon got into it. The local boy scouts would thank them for their service after each soldier signed their signature. Now that the soldiers signatures are on the print the piece will hang in the local government center where the community can see and read all the names of the soldiers who have and are serving their country from the Farmington community. The event is a collaborative effort of the Farmington American Legion, Farmington’s Lions Club, Farmington Veterans of Foreign Wars, Farmington Warrior To Citizen Program and School District 192. A really nice event
